Rieteiland House by Hans van Heeswijk Architecten:
While the front of this waterside house, on the recently developed island of IJburg near Amsterdam, is clad in perforated aluminium panels, the rear is entirely glazed, so that residents can watch the sun set. Some of these panels are positioned behind windows and can be opened automatically to allow light to enter. The waterfront façade, by contrast, is completely open and orientated to the view. On the second floor, part of the volume is omitted to create space for a screened roof terrace. Typical of Van Heeswijk’s designs is the application of ‘timeless’ materials such as glass, steel, concrete and wood. (more…)
The Gayton Road residence is an astonishing modern house designed by Paxton Locher discreetly located in the heart of Hampstead Village. This 6,500 sqf is set behind electric gates, and has a front courtyard with two off-street parking spaces. It set around a spectacular 40ft double-volume reception room. This room has two retractable glass rooflights which, when open, transform the space into an open-air courtyard. Running alongside is a dramatic custom-made glass swimming pool. (more…)
The client also act as the builder want to build a large house on very small site and the residential rules in the area fairly severe. It realized by developing a courtyard house, compressed into the small site and composed of three levels. To response the taut geological and aesthetic context of Wellington, the structure use heavy concrete elements that appear to have been jolted by large forces. (more…)
