Myra Vale House by Katon Redgen Mathieson in NSW:
Set on five acres in the NSW Southern Highlands, this house is presented as a steel and glass pavilion perched upon a raised podium to take advantage of a north aspect and views across rolling hills and a nearby reservoir. Internally the house features terrazzo floors that extend out onto external terraces. The house overlooks a contemporary garden with a small purpose made lake and a 15 meter lap pool set amongst trees. (more…)

Barcode House explores juxtapositions between the heavy and light and the old and the new. The work is formed by positioning the project’s diverse pressures into a unique situational aesthetic. Brittle masonry walls of the existing Washington, DC row house governed that the addition be engineered as a freestanding structure. Site constraints dictated a vertically oriented spatial solution. The ‘casa la semilla/ the seed house’ sited in the vast terrain and purposed to remain in constant and free contact with the surrounding environment. The Mexican architect T3arc shapes the house in a simple open form to takes advantage of the encircling forest, its linear concrete shell framing the lush and vegetative surroundings. While the structure is relatively compact, the lack of traditional walls and enclosures generates an imperceptible volume that appears to continuously expand into the distance. (more…)

Eldridge Smerin’s projects for Selfridges and Villa Moda possibly led to the design of this house for a director of a fashion company and on to the design of its London headquarters. When architects failed to obtain a consent for a new building on this leafy triangular site, the former nursery garden to the estate, Eldridge Smerin was asked to suggest a new design approach to secure a consent for a family house creatively extending the existing proto Arts and Craft house.
